Lessons from Uncle Sam
Embark on a grueling journey alongside bomb disposal teams facing off with death on the battlefield.
In his debut book, Mayfield transports his audience from the comfort and safety of their lives to the raw and unpredictable cruelty of war, death, and destruction.
His story both enlightens and uplifts readers as he goes back to his time in war zones as a bomb disposal operator in a battle of wits with the enemy where losing could have meant death. He makes a conscious choice to move forward with his life in spite of the tragedies he has had to face.
“This is my story of what it’s like to survive an explosion and go back to work the next day, over and over, until it physically became impossible to continue,” said Mayfield, who earned two Purple Heart medals, an Army Commendation for Valor, and a Bronze Star. “I had to come to grips with going from powerful, agile, and intelligent to slow and sometimes very weak and confused after so many IED hits. And now, I’m finally at ease, even proud of, the mess I am today because I earned my scars and lessons. I want my words to help others who suffer.”

It really made me understand what Ward went through during his 3 tours. It was hard to read but even harder to put down. It gives an insight to what our soldiers went through that those of us who weren’t there will never understand, but now I do, even if just a little bit. Ward tells a great story and what a story it is.

What a great read! I read it in one day as I laughed and cried and experienced heartache as the author took me with him on his journey. Since I am not in the military and have never gone to war, this book gives me an even deeper appreciation for those who sacrifice for my freedom! Thank you for this amazing book. I highly recommend it to all!

This book is a great read. It shows how human those giants we call Squad Leaders are.

A great read, vividly descriptive in the symphony of emotions one feels before, during, and after combat by those that have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

An honest look at recent wars through the eyes of a young Soldier.
Ward takes you to war where you can get just a glimpse of what it looks like and what it does.
I loved the book, Ward did a great job bringing me along for his life lessons.
Well Done Sir!

Well written. Insightful. I learned a lot from it.

Lessons from Uncle Sam is an excellent book and I highly recommend it! I was amazed how Ward made me feel like I was right there beside him throughout his whole story. My father fought in Korea and Vietnam and would rarely talk about his experiences of War. Thus, through Ward’s writing of his experience I can finally glimpse a little bit of what my father may have gone through. I recommend this book especially to civilians to get a better understanding of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thank you Ward for your bravery in writing this book. My Hope Is that through sharing your story it will also help other veterans and their families heal.

Ward Mayfield has survived a hero’s journey, and I don’t mean on the front lines. I mean since returning from battle. He has faced physical and mental torment and come out with his sense of humor intact and an urge to tell others his story. He wants to help other veterans in similar situations, and show them that they are not alone. As one who has been there and survived, I feel this excellent book should be read not only by returning veterans, but also by politicians and lawmakers, so that they learn what life on the front line can be like. We all hope they will seek alternatives to war, when the next conflict arises.

Great read. First hand accounts and true challenges of a young soldier in a war zone and sacrifices they make four our country.

Having lived through this period in Wards life being his Momma. I knew some of this. His storytelling showing the beauty of the countryside during dangerous missions was encouraging. He’s always been honest about the struggles to deal with all aspects of his service. The bonds made that are life long have blessed us all. Well done Son, well done.

This book was hard for me to read because Ward is my nephew. However, it was also an excellent read. Ward is a storyteller and was able to put the trials he and his men went through in a witty and often humorous way. I am so proud of what he has accomplished, and I would recommend this book to anyone. His struggles and accomplishments are an example to others, and he has made a huge impact on so many lives.

Just buy it and read it. It’s good, I promise.

First off, I will come right out and say it, I am biased. That being said, this was a difficult book for me to read, but for all the right reasons. The author gets pretty personal with their feelings and fears, it gives the reader a very raw perspective. I loved it, and I’m eternally grateful for the author’s experience being shared in this manner. I love you Little Brother!
